Everyone Counts, And Everyone Has A Fair Shot

Standing in a room full of students at Home Run Hitters International - a non-profit supporting children with special needs - I watched a young boy build a makeshift tower out of simple blocks, his face lighting up with pure, unfiltered curiosity. In my years volunteering there, I saw that same brilliant spark of creativity and potential every single day. But as I grew older and watched the world race ahead into the era of artificial intelligence, a troubling reality set in: the expensive, high-tech programs shaping the future were completely out of reach for the kids who needed them most. I couldn't ignore that gap. I started Open Robotics and AI (ORAI) to shatter those barriers, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or learning differences, gets a fair shot at commanding the technology of tomorrow.

I built ORAI to bridge that specific divide, moving AI education out of elite spaces and transforming it into something approachable, engaging, and deeply meaningful for young learners. Many students have a natural curiosity about how the world works, but they lack the environment to turn that interest into a deeper understanding. Because AI is shaping everyday life at a breathtaking pace, it can feel distant or intimidating. Our mission is to change that perception from the ground up.

We recently had the opportunity to put this mission into action by hosting our signature workshop, MAKE A DIFFERENCE - AI Foundation for Youth, at the historic Emancipation Park Cultural Center in Houston. The event, which spanned over 3 sessions brought together a vibrant mix of nearly 70 students; while the room was primarily filled with middle schoolers, we also welcomed a handful of eager elementary school kids. Our focus was simple: demystify the foundational concepts of AI, explore how it shows up in daily life with demos, and hands-on exploration with simple programming. The students completely blew me away. Far from being passive listeners, they were deeply inquisitive, pushing the conversation forward with thoughtful questions about algorithmic fairness, machine creativity, and how these systems actually process data under the hood. It was incredible to see how quickly the younger elementary students caught on, matching the energy and curiosity of the older kids.

Throughout the session, a remarkable shift happened. Students who were initially quiet became the most active voices in the room, leaning in to suggest ideas and debate concepts. It reinforced the core belief that inspired me to start ORAI in the first place: these young learners do not lack potential. They simply need access, intentional encouragement, and a supportive environment where they can explore unfamiliar topics without fear of feeling out of place. Witnessing that spark ignite across different age groups in real time was one of the most fulfilling milestones of my journey so far.

Moving forward, this event has entirely reaffirmed ORAI’s path. We will continue creating inclusive, empowering spaces where emerging technologies feel welcoming rather than exclusive. Our ultimate goal isn’t just to teach code or hand out concepts - it is to help students realize that they are fully capable of understanding, commanding, and actively shaping the technological world they will inherit.
